NEW DELHI, Apr 23, 2022 (AFP) – The Dalai Lama, spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhists in exile in India, called on Saturday (23) to reduce the use of fossil fuels and to use renewable energy sources, during a meeting. held for Earth Day.
“During my life, I have witnessed the decrease in snowfall: first in Tibet and then in Dharamshala,” said the 86-year-old Dalai Lama.
The spiritual leader called for “urgent measures to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the adoption of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar”.
“The threat of climate change is not limited to national borders, it affects us all,” he insisted.
A group of activists fighting climate change presented the Dalai Lama – who lives in exile in Dharamshala – with a block of ice cut from one of the glaciers in Ladakh, a Himalayan region in the far north of India.
Placed on a wooden board, the ice block symbolized the melting of the Himalayan glaciers, victim of climate change. It was transported 250 km by volunteers, by bicycle, on foot, or thanks to electric vehicles, to raise awareness of the consequences of CO2 emissions from glaciers.
