There is difficulty in conducting the day to day of the Central Bank (BC) without a broader autonomy, which includes administrative and financial issues, said this Tuesday the president of the autarchy, Roberto Campos Neto.
At an event in the Senate in honor of economist Roberto Campos, the BC president mentioned that his grandfather said it was important for the monetary authority to have operational, administrative and financial autonomy.
“Today we live the reality of having operational autonomy without having administrative and financial autonomy, and we see the difficulty that it is in the day-to-day running the Central Bank without having a broader autonomy”, he said.
Despite having obtained operational autonomy, the BC is not administratively and financially independent. Decisions on salary readjustments for civil servants, for example, depend on budgetary release by the federal government.
In April, BC servers started a strike to pressure the government to grant readjustments, which affected the disclosure of data and indicators of the body. The movement was suspended, but the mobilization was maintained.
