After another GP without being able to leave the back of the pack, Nicholas Latifi is increasingly under pressure. With a contract only until the end of the year and adding up the performances so far, speculation about the Canadian rider’s retirement at the end of the season grew in the days after the Emilia Romagna GP.
After the 16th place won by the driver, Ted Kravitz, a journalist for Sky explained that Williams should replace Latifi with the 2021 Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri. The Australian is a development and test driver for Alpine, but the French team assured that the objective this year is to find a place in Formula 1 as a main driver for the youngster. Adding to the fact that Laurent Rossi, CEO of Alpine, has stated that “borrowing” Piastri to a team that does not fight directly with Alpine is a plausible scenario, this theory may make sense.
Also on Sunday, Spanish journalist Albert Fabrega spoke about a “driver swap” in the near future, without wishing to name names.
Nicholas Latifi admitted that “Alex clearly feels more comfortable in the car”, this being a key point in the Canadian’s performances, according to the driver himself. Latifi stated that since Saudi Arabia he doesn’t have a good feeling with the FW44. “I also have to get to that level”, said Latifi, comparing his performance with that of his teammate. Since the beginning of the season, Latifi has always finished in 16th place, with the exception of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he retired.
The truth is that Formula 1 is not a sport that is known for giving drivers time, even those who pay for their place within the team.
