Lando Norris finished the Emilia Romagna GP in third place, ahead of George Russell of Mercedes. It was an unexpected podium, but the McLaren cars were at the head of the second pack all weekend, even better than the Mercedes cars.
For the head of the McLaren Formula 1 team, Andreas Seidl, getting ahead of the Mercedes cars is not his goal.
“I have no pleasure in being, for a single weekend, in front of Mercedes,” said Seidl, quoted by Racefans.net. “Our goal when we wake up in the morning is to win races. We know that we are not in a position to do that at the moment, because we are not yet at the right moment of our path to get everything we need to regularly fight for victory in races, but that is what we are focused on.”
The McLaren team boss stresses that they need to close the gap to the bigger teams in terms of infrastructure and experience.
“We need to close the gap over the next few years in terms of infrastructure compared to the teams that are racing ahead of us,” said Seidl. “We also need to close the gap in terms of experience within the team after we’ve made all the changes.”
