Although taking orders from this October 2021, Peugeot Portugal has only now decided to officially present the new 308 SW. A more familiar variant that arrives at dealerships in May, for the first time with hybrid engines, the sedan’s equipment levels, and prices from €27,000. Adding to a strong funding campaign.

At a time when the saloon, which has been on sale in the Portuguese market since last December, already has an extensive phalanx of indefectsible products, the result not only of its striking lines, but also of a strong technological component of which hybrid engines are also a part, behold, Peugeot Portugal plays the real ace of trump card, adding to the hatchback, the variant that, over the years, has most marked the image of the lion brand, in the C segment – the SW.

Even in the face of a world marked by various uncertainties – it is the COVID-19 pandemic, the shortage of semiconductors, the war in Ukraine, etc… -, Peugeot thus reinforces its bet on a segment that, not being the most important in our Country (it is in Europe), constitutes an important contribution to the sustained growth that the brand has been registering over the last 12 years. And that the launch, now, of the 308 SW, will seek to help renew what was the last, and perhaps the most significant, achievement of the French brand in our country: obtaining the scepter of the best-selling brand, in this case, during the year 2021.

Moreover, and to help this hope, not only the fact that it was also on the podium (3rd) among the brands that sell battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), just behind the leader Mercedes and BMW, as well as all the indices that attest to the affirmation of the “lion” among the Portuguese. As is the case with the loyalty rate, which rose from 43% in 2020 to 52% in 2021, or the new customer acquisition rate, which rose from 6.3% to 11.8%. With both equally contributing to Peugeot becoming a leader in purchase intentions…

With PHEV engines and more sex appeal. Peugeot presents the new 308 SW

Meanwhile and with the launch of the 308 SW, which Peugeot Portugal believes could be successful, mostly among companies (80% of sales expectations, against 20% of individuals), which should also prefer electrified engines. (85%), Peugeot is aiming, as of May, at an even greater target: to lead the entire C segment (saloons and vans) and even among what are the PHEV proposals; be they saloons or SW!

Bigger, with more space and more luggage

Speaking of this new model itself, the statement, from the outset, that it is not a mere variant, but a proposal conceived practically apart from the saloon. And that adds to the expressive and even sporty style, inaugurated by the five-door, values such as a greater volume of cargo, more space on board and practical use.

Thanks to a substantial increase in the rear projection, the Peugeot 308 van announces a boot capacity that reaches 1,634 litersThanks to a substantial increase in the rear projection, the Peugeot 308 van announces a boot capacity that reaches 1,634 liters

Helping to justify these arguments, an increase, compared to the saloon, of 6 cm (4.64 m) in the outer length, 5 cm (2.73 m) more in the wheelbase, but also 2 cm (1.44 m) less m) in height. Changes that, according to Peugeot, make it possible to offer not only a more elegant car, thanks also to the more sloping and recessed windscreen, as well as more knee room in the second row (129 mm). And, above all, a luggage compartment volume that, thanks to a 21 cm longer rear projection, starts at 608 liters (548 l, for the hybrid versions) and ends at just 1,634 liters (1,547 l), with the rear seats folded down.

Still in the luggage compartment, the promise of greater functionality, especially in versions with only thermal engines, which do not have any battery under the floor, thus freeing up space for a trapdoor. All versions have both the so-called ‘Magic Handle’, the handle that makes it easier to fold down the seatbacks, and the electrically operated rear gate.

In the cabin, a replica of the environment opened with the new 308, starting with the renewed Peugeot i-Cockpit, excellent in the way it welcomes the driver, but whose instrument panel, 100% digital, but also smaller (the car we drive it was an Allure Pack), in addition to being configurable, it seems to have too much information for so little space available.

Marked by the unavoidable i-Cockpit, the Peugeot 308 SW replicates the saloon environment Marked by the unavoidable i-Cockpit, the Peugeot 308 SW replicates the saloon environment

Also present is the i-Connect technology, with ‘Wireless mirroring’, pairing of up to two smartphones, over-the-air map updating and the ‘Ok Peugeot’ voice assistant. All this, in a central screen with a captivating design and layout, but in which the controls have become practically all tactile. Which sometimes forces you to take your eyes off the road to select the desired command…

Finally, and in a proposal that, although familiar, does not fail to show a certain “shyness” in the rear seats (and, mainly, in the middle), the package of technologies to aid driving and safety, which passes, as well , with solutions such as the Rear Warning system with Rear Traffic Alert, the new high-definition 180° reversing camera or the automatic emergency braking system with a risk alert. collision.

With engines for all tastes

Identical to the saloon, is the offer in terms of engines, which is thus composed of petrol blocks – 1.2 PureTech 110 and 130 hp – and Diesel – 1.5 BlueHDI 130 hp -, both available with either a six-speed manual gearbox ( CVM6), as well as an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic (EAT8), in addition to, and for the first time in a Peugeot in this segment, a plug-in hybrid propulsion system, with two levels of combined power: 180 and 225 hp. Invariably combined with a specific 8-speed automatic gearbox (e-EAT8) and promising, thanks to the integration of a 12.4 kWh battery, electric ranges that, in the 180 hp version, vary between 60 and 72 km, depending on either a mixed route or just in town. Or, in the case of the 225 hp version, ranging between 60 and 69 km.

Available with two hybrid engines, the 308 SW achieves electric ranges of up to 72 km...Available with two hybrid engines, the 308 SW achieves electric ranges of up to 72 km…

At the presentation event where we were present, the possibility of driving the 180 hp hybrid engine, a solution that, consisting of a 150 hp PureTech gasoline engine, plus an 81 kW (110 hp) electric motor, always showed a response. ready on the accelerator, although and due to the route of many curves, faced with applied form, registering somewhat high consumption, around 8 l/100 km. This, with the French van responding, not only to the greediness of the engine, but also to the greater application in driving, with the same behavior that we had already experienced in the saloon, of stepping firmly without ceasing to be comfortable, and, above all, very precise and involving in the description of the curves. Even without the need for steering corrections.

Moving on to battery charging, the 308 SW is equipped with a 3.7 kW single-phase charger (7.4 kW as an option) which allows using either a simple 8A domestic socket, with a of 1.8 kW, through which it restores the full capacity in something like 7h05m, as to a reinforced socket of 16A and with 3.2 kW of power, through which it will take 3h52m to reach 100% capacity. Or even a 32A wallbox, capable of providing a maximum power of 7.4 kW, a solution that will take 1h40m.

At the same time, and also as a way of increasing the attractiveness of hybrid engines, Peugeot has prepared a series of offers, such as charging cables or the wallbox, or even the provision of alternative mobility solutions, using the rental, under special conditions, of vehicles with thermal engines, for longer journeys.

Specifically for the battery, the guarantee of 8 years or 160,000 km, as well as the issue of a certificate of battery capacity, whenever the owner has the vehicle serviced at the brand’s official dealerships. For which you can also benefit from service contracts and travel assistance

From €27,000… and with the Easy Credit option

Finally, and regarding the range and prices for Portugal, an offer based on five levels of equipment – Active Pack, Allure, Allure Pack, GT and GT Pack -, with prices starting from €27,000 when combined with thermal engines (Active Pack), with the Allure costing €3,220 (€30,220) more, and the Allure Pack costing €900 (€31,120) more than the latter. The GT, on the other hand, starts at €35,470, that is, an additional €5,250, while the GT Pack reaches €37,520, as a result of an increase of €2,150 compared to the previous one.

Moving on to hybrid engines, a Hybrid 180, with entry prices of €39,150 (Active Pack), €41,350 (Allure), €42,250 (Allure Pack), €44,700 (GT) and €46,750 (GT Pack), while the The most powerful variant, with a combined output of 225 hp and available only with the two highest equipment levels, has a base price of €46,200 (GT) and €48,250 (GT Pack). More generally, a difference of €1,100 compared to the price of the saloon, in the corresponding versions.

For those who do not actually want to buy a 308 SW, but just enjoy it, with the intention of exchanging it after 48 months or 60,000 km, Peugeot Portugal proposes, for individuals, the Easy Credit solution, through which any customer can have a 308 SW Active Pack with 1.2 Puretech 110 hp engine, six-speed manual gearbox (CVM6) and metallic paint, upon payment of an initial amount of €4,750, followed by a monthly fee, throughout the contract, from just €220.

If you prefer the 308 SW Hybrid Active Pack 180 e-EAT8 version, the same entry of €4,750, but with the monthly price rising to €360. Although and in this case, already with the single-phase charger of 7.4 kW, the metallic paint and the offer of 2 years of maintenance free of charge, included.
