The difficulties of the automotive market in Portugal continue, after, last April, having registered a fall of 19.9 percent, compared to the same month of 2021. As for the first four months of 2022, a smaller fall, of 0.7%, compared to the same period of the previous year.
The conclusions are based on data collected by ACAP – Associação Automóvel de Portugal, which, still for the period from January to April 2022, refer to a drop of 39.6 percent, compared to the last year before the arrival of the pandemic – 2019.
With a total of 56,992 new vehicles registered during the first four months of the year, this also represents a decrease of 0.7 percent compared to the same period in 2021.
Analyzing only the month of April, a total of 14,516 vehicles, that is, 19.9 percent less than in the same month of 2021 and 41.1 percent less than in April 2019.
With four months already passed since the beginning of 2022, the automotive sector remains in the red
Moving on to the analysis by categories, an already expected dominance of passenger cars in total sales, with this type of vehicles registering a total of 12,420 vehicles during the last month of April 2022, that is, 16.1% less than in same month of 2021 and 41.2% less than in the fourth month of 2019
As for the four-month period, a total of 47,191 new enrollments, synonymous, in this case, with an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period in 2021, but also a decrease of 41.4% compared to 2019.
Speaking specifically of light passenger vehicles powered by alternative energy, a new and important increase (39.0%) in registrations during the last four months, with 100% electric vehicles leading the way, compared to the same period in 2021: 88 ,1%.

In the case of Light Goods Vehicles, a drop of 39.6% in April 2022, compared to the same month of 2021, not exceeding the 1,736 new units registered. With the decline proving to be even more pronounced when compared to April 2019: 45 percent.

In cumulative terms, a total of 8,164 vehicles were registered, a synonym for 17.9 percent less compared to the same period in 2021 and 31.1 percent less compared to the first four months of 2019.
Heavy Vehicles with (also) negative APR
Finally, with regard to Heavy Vehicles, both Goods and Passengers, a decrease of 15.7% in the number of new vehicles registered (360) in April 2022, compared to the same month in 2021, with the negative difference for the same month of 2019 to be only 7.2%.
Regarding the first four months of the year, a total of 1,637 vehicles registered from January to April 2022, which represents a slight increase, of only 0.1 percent, compared to the same period in 2021. of a fall, this one is much more accentuated, of 11.0 percent, compared to the first four months of 2019.
