The Minister of Agriculture, Marcos Montes, defended this Wednesday at the Global Food Security – Call to Action ministerial meeting, held in New York (USA), free trade in agriculture “to promote prosperity and contribute to the fight against hunger and global malnutrition”.
“In an interdependent and interconnected world, no country can remain isolated and prosper. Food security, as a common goal, is everyone’s responsibility,” he said in a statement.
Marcos Montes represents Brazil at the event, organized by the United States Department of State, which brings together ministers from more than 30 countries at the United Nations (UN) headquarters. The objective is to identify the main challenges and mobilize actions to face global food insecurity.
According to the minister, the effects of the war in Ukraine have disrupted global commodity supply chains, leaving essential inputs, such as fertilizers, exposed to the risk of shortages and rising prices. “In the globalized world, production does not just mean planting and harvesting. It also includes ensuring the supply of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and fuels, combining all this with technology and distributing foodstuffs across the planet,” stated Marcos Montes.
Earlier, the minister met with the State Department’s Special Envoy for Global Food Security, Cary Fowler, and with the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohamed. At the meetings, according to the ministry, he highlighted Brazil’s willingness to cooperate in the context of the current food security crisis.
