As of the Monaco GP, McLaren will start using the “S”, symbol of Ayrton Senna that was painted on Williams cars until this year, on the Halo of the MCL36.
From the 1995 season onwards, the season following Senna’s fatal accident at the controls of the Williams, the British team decided to place the symbol on their cars that honored the memory of the Brazilian driver. For 2022, the team’s managers decided to remove that symbol, with Jost Capito arguing that he didn’t want to remind current drivers of what had happened, with the museum of the structure founded by Frank Williams having a tribute to Senna.
Now McLaren, the team with which Ayrton Senna was three-time Formula 1 world champion and won five consecutive Monaco GPs (1989 to 1993), will use the “S” in memory of its former champion.
“Ayrton Senna is, and always will be, a McLaren legend,” said Zak Brown, McLaren Racing CEO of the team’s decision. “His performances with McLaren, which won him three World Drivers’ Championships, cemented his place as one of Formula 1’s greatest drivers. When he tragically passed away in 1994, the entire motorsport world felt a sense of irreplaceable loss, but his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of Formula 1 fans around the world. We feel it is only fair that we as McLaren recognize his contribution to our sport, taking his name with us wherever we go racing.”
Brown also recalled that the Monaco race was the right opportunity to present the symbol on the team’s two cars for the first time.
“From the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, the McLaren MCL36 will carry the Senna logo, marking our commitment to celebrating his legacy. I can’t think of a better race than the Monaco Grand Prix to kick off this recognition of Ayrton’s life. Having won the Grand Prix six times, more than any other driver, Ayrton proved that his skill and skill behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car could rarely be matched. This addition to our Formula 1 cars will be permanent, and was added with the support of the Senna family. It will serve as a constant reminder of Ayrton Senna’s sensational talent for us as a team, and for all our fans around the world.”
We are honoured to carry the @AyrtonSenna name from the #MonacoGP onwards.
