In several fuel consumption tests carried out by independent German publications, the Volvo FH with I-Save achieved the best results and beats the competition.
The independent German magazines “Trucker” and “Transport” recently tested the Volvo FH 500 with I-Save and other trucks from European manufacturers. The Swedish model was the winner in the diesel and AdBlue consumption tests. Despite the low consumption, the Volvo vehicle also achieved a high average speed in the “Trucker” test and in the “Transport” magazine test, it even beat competitors in speed.
“Our engineers were able to combine high speed with very low fuel consumption, which is an extraordinary achievement,” says Peter Franzén, engine product manager at Volvo Trucks.
. “Often it is necessary to choose one or the other, but we were able to prove that you can combine economy and performance”, says Volvo Trucks’ engine product manager.
“Even more impressive is that we obtained the best result in fuel consumption in both tests and despite the truck being tested does not have the latest updates introduced to reduce fuel consumption!”
The Volvo FH 500 truck tested had the I-Save specification, which is a variant that combines different driveline and software features to lower fuel consumption to a minimum.
Motor turbocompound
At the “heart” of the I-Save system is the turbocompound engine that allows driving at very low revs and high gear ratios for long periods of time.
With the latest improvements it is possible to lower fuel consumption by up to 13% compared to the levels achieved when it was introduced in 2019.
“To improve fuel efficiency, we took the new Volvo FH with I-Save one step further to achieve full engine optimisation. Considering the current high energy prices, this was the best time”, says Peter Franzén.

The engine’s combustion process has been improved by adapting the injectors, compression and crankshaft to pistons with a new spline design. Overall weight and internal friction have also been reduced. The high-performance turbo and oil pump have been improved and even the air and oil filters have been fine-tuned for better performance.
The engine works in conjunction with an automated I-Shift gearbox that is now 30% faster. Improved response contributes to improved consumption, pleasantness and smooth ride.
I-Torque e I-See
I-Torque is a new torque software that increases energy efficiency by analyzing topographic data of the road ahead, using the I-See function and adapting driving to the route.
I-See uses information about the planned route to make the most of the truck’s kinetic energy when driving on rougher roads.
The new I-Torque software optimizes the engine’s gear ratio and torque. The system assesses the road ahead, the topography and the truck’s weight to decide how much engine torque is needed to drive as efficiently as possible.
