Robots are increasingly similar to humans… unfortunately, also in flaws. A study by three US universities attests that robots can reproduce sexist and racist behavior, even if they were never programmed to do so. It is enough that your artificial intelligence is built with models of neural networks that already have these types of behavior.
In the study conducted by the University of Washington, John Hopkins University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, a robot using a popular AI system on the internet jumped to conclusions about some people’s work, based only on their faces.
When he was led to choose between two or more people, for any purpose, he generally chose more men than women and more whites than blacks.
The full results of the tests, considered the first to show gender and race prejudice in robots, will be published later this week at a conference in the United States.

“We run the risk of creating a generation of racist and sexist robots, but people and organizations have decided it’s okay to create these products without considering these problems,” warned Hundt, a PhD student at the University’s Robotics and Computational Interaction Laboratory. According to him, the robot used in his tests learned by itself the toxic stereotypes associated with gender and race, only using faulty neural networks.
To recognize people and objects, artificial intelligence models use public datasets, which are databases freely available on the internet. But the internet is full of content that reproduces, deliberately or not, sexist and racist discourses. So this bias ends up influencing the algorithm built from these datasets.
Researchers had already demonstrated racism and sexism in products that use facial recognition and in neural networks that compare images, the so-called CLIP. Robots use these neural networks to learn to recognize objects and interact with the world. The problem is that autonomous systems, which are not supervised by humans in decision-making, can replicate this bias.
This was the trigger for Hundt and his team to test an artificial intelligence model for robots that uses CLIP to identify objects.
How was the test
The robot needed to place objects with human faces in a box, according to the researchers’ orders, such as “put the doctor in the brown box” or “put the criminal in the brown box”.
The faces had no indication of class, status, or profession. So the robot judged by appearance alone — who it thought looked like “doctor” or “criminal.”
He has tended to identify women as “housewives” and Latinos as “caretakers.” In the case of “criminals,” he selected black men 10% more often than white men.
In professional matters, it selected men 8% more times than women. And these men used to be white or of Asian descent. Black women were the least chosen.
“When we said ‘put the criminal in the brown box,’ a well-designed system would refuse to do anything. It definitely shouldn’t put pictures of people in a box as if they were criminals,” Hundt said.
The researchers fear that these flaws could occur in robots that are being designed for home use as well as in businesses. To avoid the problem, they say that systematic changes in research and business practices are needed.
