Hyundai and Michelin have renewed their partnership to create new tires for electric cars. The previous collaboration led to a tire specific to the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Hyundai and Michelin have signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of a new generation of tires for premium electric vehicles.
Under this agreement, Michelin will work on a new generation of tires that will have performance characteristics optimized to allow an electric vehicle to travel longer distances, in addition to being more durable to respond to increasing ranges and greater loads of electric vehicles.
On the other hand, Hyundai and Michelin intend to conduct joint research to analyze tire wear, tire load and tread friction to improve tire quality.
As they are intended for use on premium vehicles, the tires will also need to be quiet and comfortable at high speeds. Finally, both companies want to make tires greener by incorporating 50% from environmentally friendly materials instead of 20% from current tires.
Previous agreement is from 2017
“This partnership with Michelin will lead to real innovations in tire technology, solidifying the Hyundai Motor Group’s position at the forefront of the smart mobility industry,” said Bong-soo Kim, Head of Hyundai’s Chassis Development Centre.
“By matching our mobility technology with Michelin’s tire expertise, we are confident in our ability to achieve advanced innovations in tire performance improvements and synergize this organic collaboration.”
