The average price of diesel at Brazilian gas stations rose about 10% in June compared to May, after a Petrobras readjustment, and became more expensive than gasoline for the first time in more than a decade, according to data from the Index survey. of Ticket Log Prices (IPTL), released this Thursday.
The rise came after a 14.26% increase in prices of Petrobras’ product at refineries in the middle of the month, and amid a debate to reduce fuel prices through tax cuts.
At gas stations, the price of a liter of common diesel ended June with an average of 7.87 reais, a value 9.8% higher compared to May. The S-10 diesel was sold at 8 reais at gas stations, up 9.9%, according to the Ticket Log indicator, Edenred Brasil’s fleet management and mobility solutions brand.
In the first half of the year, the two fuels closed the period with increases of 36.4% and 37.3%, respectively, according to the indicator based on supplies made at Ticket Log’s 21,000 service stations.
This is the first time in 12 years of IPTL history that the price of diesel has surpassed that of gasoline, which closed at 7.56 reais per litre, added Ticket Log.
“Since June 17th, the date on which the last adjustment in the transfer to refineries for diesel took effect, the value of a liter of fuel has soared at the country’s filling stations”, said the Director General of Mainstream of the Division of Edenred Brasil’s Fleet and Mobility, Douglas Pina, in a note.
In comparison with the IPTL survey for the first half of June, ordinary diesel increased 6.1% and the S-10 became 6.3% more expensive in these few days, according to IPTL.
In the case of diesel, part of the States already have an ICMS rate below 17%, a limit imposed by recent legislation that has been questioned by federative entities in the Federal Supreme Court. A clearer analysis of the impact of the tax on the value of fuel can be seen in the coming days.
ethanol and gasoline
The average price of a liter of gasoline closed the month of June with an average of 7.56 reais, up 0.23% compared to May, while ethanol was sold at 6 reais at the filling stations, with a decrease of 1.98% in price.
The slight increase in the country’s average price occurred despite a reduction in the ICMS on gasoline in São Paulo, the main consumer market, at the end of the month.
São Paulo reduced the gasoline rate from 25% to 18%, maintaining the rate for hydrous ethanol.
The state tax cut was implemented after the presidential sanction of the law that limits charges on fuel, electricity, communications and public transport.
For hydrous ethanol, a biofuel that competes with gasoline at the pumps, the São Paulo government informed that it kept the ICMS rate unchanged at 13.3%, which reduces the price advantage of ethanol in relation to fossil fuel.
The state of Goiás also announced a reduction in the ICMS rate applied to fuel, energy and communication. In gasoline, the rate increased from 30% to 17%; in ethanol, from 25% to 17%, and in diesel oil, from 16% to 14%.
Also according to Ticket Log, in the first half of the year, gasoline closed up 10% and ethanol was 4.2% more expensive for Brazilian drivers.
“After the last adjustment in the transfer to refineries for gasoline, valid since June 17th, the value of a liter of fuel came to cost 7.68 reais, as we identified in the average data of the 22nd. IPTL also identified that the last days of the month signal an eventual decline in the price of fuel”, said Pina.
