The FIA World Council endorsed the entry into the WRC of a new class for all-electric vehicles. The FIA’s rally pyramid now includes EV cars in competitions sanctioned by the FIA. Some brands, such as Renault and Opel, which already have an Opel Corsa eRally in competition, have long since been able to stay in the new Rally5e class, which will be divided into two subdivisions depending on whether a car’s battery power is higher or lower than 60kWh.
This decision has been expected for a long time, the entry of electric cars in the WRC could only be made, with some success for the base of the pyramid, so it won’t be long before an EV competition appears in the World Rally, along with everything else.
As for top cars, it depends on how the industry evolves, but for now the idea is that EVs are still totally out of the question. Rally2 should become hybrids only in 2025.
The initial ‘timeline’ was 2023, but that plan was put on hold due to the arrival of sustainable fuel that came into force this year, with the builders feeling that this would be a sufficient step for now.
For this reason and not only electric cars in the WRC will enter ‘slowly’, unless the industry defines itself and things accelerate…
