Are we ready for a “people’s car” for 500 thousand? Opinion “Behind the wheel”

The leader of the Just Russia – For Truth party, Sergei Mironov, proposed creating an affordable vehicle.

Behind the wheel

The requirements for a “people’s car” are simple for the head of the Righteous Russians – it must meet modern basic safety and comfort characteristics and cost 500,000 rubles at the same time.

What the parliamentarian sees in such a car:

*This material was created by a person who has the status of a foreign agent in the Russian Federation.

a gasoline engine with a volume of about 1.5 liters, a power of 100–120 hp a manual gearbox (MT) increased ground clearance (which one – did not specify) two airbags air conditioning an anti-lock system (ABS) and an exchange rate stability system (ESC) an ERA-GLONASS system.

Is all this achievable at a modest price of half a million, our specialist explains.

Expert opinion

Behind the wheel

Maxim Kadakov, editor-in-chief of the magazine “Behind the wheel”:

– We already have such a car – this is a Grant, which without ESP and ABS is cheaper than not to buy for 700 thousand. Is it possible to make a naked Grant 200 thousand cheaper? It is forbidden. Yes, and there is nowhere to “undress” it – it’s not without seats to sell it.

The idea itself appeals to me. But we don’t have a body, a motor, or a box for such a project. If only the state pumps budget money into this, and some taxpayers will subsidize the purchase of cars for others.

Now everyone will remember about the Oka. It was a small, uncomfortable car with a very low level of passive safety. Should there be such a people’s car? Of course not.

Yes, now you can try to create such a car, and it will cost about 500 thousand. And now you get a tight and not very safe Oka. At the same time, now only ERA-GLONASS costs 40 thousand – that is, about 10% of the estimated selling price of the car. And these blocks are still in short supply even for factories.

But as soon as the alleged Oka appears on sale, the well-known garage conversations will come into play: a 10-year-old Solaris is better than this new bucket on stamps and with window lifter oars.
