Non-nuclear “Atom”: the mystery of 105,000 pre-orders for a non-existent electric car

Amazing things are happening in the media space of our country. It seems that after a serious breakdown in the automobile market in 2022, officials, manufacturers, dealers, and even the buyers themselves have completely lost all sorts of guidelines. Distinguishing reality from fantasy has become an impossible task for them. They are ready to believe in any nonsense, as long as it is presented with a serious facial expression and appropriate emotional intensity.

IT’S EVEN A NOODLE CASE

Here, for example, is what Anatoly Kiyashko, director for interaction with government authorities at Kama JSC, said regarding his ghostly electric car “Atom”: “Currently, there are 105 thousand booked pre-orders for B2B and B2C clients. Mostly for B2B, but shows demand in both directions.”

First of all, you should pay attention to the position of the organizer of the information dump, so that it becomes clear who the message is aimed at. This is a signal not for the average buyer, but for officials from the auto industry. Their interest in the project should be supported in every possible way, otherwise they will not see subsidies like their ears without a mirror. Now to the point.

In general, even a no brainer that the figure of 105 thousand has nothing to do with the actual state of affairs in the industry. Moreover, it has nothing to do with the predicted state of the market in the coming years. This is not difficult to notice if we compare it with the real achievements of the Russian economy in the dubious “green” area.

According to the analytical agency Autostat, for the entire 2023, only 14,089 electric vehicles were purchased in Russia – both produced in our country and imported by all legally available means. Next year, according to the forecasts of the National Rating Agency (NRA), sales are expected at 30,000 units, and the basic scenario of Autostat assumes a volume of 25 thousand units. And this, we note, is the total contribution of all manufacturers, and not just one very smart and assertive one.

WRONG DEGREE OF INSANE

What 105 thousand? What are you talking about, Mr. Kiyashko? Let’s talk about the fruits of some virtual thoughts of companies and workers – should they buy an electric car? But still, the discrepancy with the real market capacity is striking, causing justified mistrust. And it is impossible to verify the data announced by Kama.

“Don’t consider yourself a figure equal to Churchill,” Müller sarcastically remarked to Stirlitz. The same could be said to the management of Kama. Indeed, in 2016, 400 thousand people placed pre-orders for the Tesla Model 3. But this is for Elon Musk’s Tesla, and this is in America, where the degree of craze for electric cars is quite high. Why would our compatriots rush at the unfortunate “Atom”, which is not even visible in the project yet?

Let us repeat once again what is known about this model. Power – 150 kW (204 hp), acceleration to 100 km/h – 8 s, range – 500 km. The dimensions of the electric car are 3995 mm in length, 1780 mm in width and 1615 mm in height. Not much. But this is all inaccurate, since until now only a model of the car has been presented, and its appearance does not correspond to the appearance of the production car – which the developers specifically notified.

One of the two domestic companies that actually produces electric cars, and is not shaking the air about it, is Motorinvest. Deputy General Director for Production Sergei Mamontov told reporters that 12-14 thousand Evolutes could be produced in 2024. Much more modest than the Kama’s swing, and even then it is very doubtful.

Let us recall that at the beginning of last year, the managing partner of the enterprise, Andrei Reznikov, assured that in 2023 more than 6,000 Evolutes would see the light of day. In fact, only 2020 copies were sold in Russia. The second company is the capital’s Moskvich. The plans of this plant for last year included the production of two thousand Moskvich 3e electric crossovers, but in fact, 575 units reached customers. Are the scale of the market clear?

Yes, that’s exactly the reality. And all exaggerated plans, as well as sarcastic statements, are nothing more than a game for the public. Or is this an attempt to get closer to the full flow of government funding, since our economists and financiers are still moving in the wake of Western liberal “green” tales.
