Accidents and deaths decreasing in the first half of 2023

DECREASING – Those presented by ACI-ISTAT relating to the estimates on the road accidents in Italy occurred during the first 6 months of 2023. In fact, in the period between January and June of this year, accidents resulting in injuries to people decreased by 1% (79,124) compared to the same period in 2022. A similar drop in percentage (-0.9%) is also recorded for the number of injured (106,493). However, the decrease in victims by the thirtieth day was much more significant, falling by 2.5% with 1,384 crosses on the roads. Data that shows an average of 437 accidents per day, with 7.6 deaths and 588 injuries throughout Italy.

SAFER ROADS – This year, victims in particular have decreased highway (-9.7%) and on extra-urban roads (-3.3%), while those on the streets remain almost stable urbane (-0.1%). This happened despite the fact that there was a growth of 5.4% in vehicles/km traveled on the network, the result of an increase in mileage (+7.1%) by light vehicles, while the volumes for heavy vehicles recorded only a slight increase (+0.6%). On the main extra-urban roads, traffic grew by approximately 4% for light vehicles and 1% for heavy vehicles, with a particular increase in the first quarter.

IN THE LONG IT IS NOT ENOUGH – The numbers are even better if compare with the first ones 6 months of 2019 (reference year for road safety of the decade 2021-2030), compared to which there was a decrease of 5.4% in accidents, 9.0% in injuries and 9.8% in deaths. However, there is no shortage of gray areas. In fact thegoal for the decade is to halve the road deaths recorded in 2019 by 2030. Therefore, while on the one hand the 9.8% drop in deaths recorded so far is undoubtedly good news, it is still not enough to reach the final -50%, for which would require an average annual reduction of just over 8%.
