Usually, attention is paid to the exhaust pipe only when black or gray smoke begins to fall from there. This is already an extreme and it is absolutely clear that there is some kind of trouble with the engine. However, it is worth looking into the pipe while there are no such symptoms yet. About why it is necessary to do this regularly, says the AvtoVzgyald portal.
If the engine is working, then there will be a minimum amount of plaque in the pipe. But if there is a lot of black slag, this should alert. Usually, other symptoms appear along with it, such as, for example, “shoots” from the silencer or excessive smoke. And it can also be difficult to start the engine and increased fuel consumption. There are actually two reasons for “blackness”: engine oil or unburned fuel getting into the exhaust system. They form deposits. However, the most common is a combination of the two.
If you suddenly noticed that carbon deposits appeared abruptly, and extraneous sounds are heard from the muffler, then there is a problem in the power system. The “body” gasoline may be to blame. Then it is enough to refuel at a proven gas station and pour a cleaning additive into the tank so that the symptoms disappear. This will save you from the cost of diagnosing and replacing spark plugs. Here we recall that on many machines where the motor is placed longitudinally or it is opposed, a simple replacement of consumables is very expensive.

If you find a strong soot on a used car that you are going to buy, it may have a valve timing failure. Or problems with the phase regulator clutch. Repair of these faults is also expensive, so it is better to refuse the purchase.
There may also be various “glitches” of the electronic engine control unit. Due to incorrect commands given by the “brains”, the fuel mixture turns out to be too rich, so gasoline does not burn out completely.
Now – about engine oil. It can enter the exhaust pipe due to severe wear or the occurrence of piston rings. The lubricant simply settles on the walls of the cylinders, penetrates into the combustion chamber and from where it is thrown into the intake pipe, where it forms oily black soot. This is where decoking can help. However, this procedure is not always useful. That is why a visual exhaust check is only the most elementary diagnostic method. Next — open the hood and begin to look for the cause of the problem in more detail.
